Episode 1

Changes from the Japanese version to the American broadcast.

Origional Japanese Version	Toonami / FUNimation broadcast
Introduction: Yuusuke saving a kid and getting killed by the bad driver.	Basically the same, the vocals are all a bit louder in the. American version. The bad driver sounds less freaked out.
Driver claims it’s his fault. Japanese often claim responsibility for everything including things that happen even if it’s not their fault.	Driver says it was an accident. American’s automatically try to pass the blame from themselves. It’s a cultural dialogue change.
Yuusuke wakes up very creeped out, narration begins.	Yuusuke wakes up, freaked out. He has a lot more vocal activity in this version. Longer yells etc. Narration begins.
Title name: I’m surprised that I’m dead	Same sparkles for title name, SAME TITLE NAME!! shock ::claps, impressed:: Title Name: Surprised to be Dead Subtitle, Yu Yu Hakusho (American Logo)
Pan down on Yuusuke’s body. Yuusuke speaks for the first time. “What? I’ve fallen and can’t get up?”	Pan down on Yuusuke’s body and Yuusuke speaks. “Man, this is weird. Stupid weird.” eye twitch well that was a stupid dialogue change. What the hell? Stupid weird? Sou da na, at least Yuusuke’s voice sounds decent. And I kid you not. He sounds totally all right. double shock
Yuusuke leans down and tries to touch his body. Ambulance appears, medics try and clear a path. “Step aside.” “Clear a path please!”	Yuusuke leans down to touch his body and makes a ‘huh’ sound. Ambulance comes up and medics try to clear a path. “All right people, clear a path.” “Right. Here’s one.”
Checking the boy out. “The child is only scratched.” Speaking about Yuusuke. “This is bad.” “Let’s get him on the stretcher.” Working to put Yuusuke on the stretcher.	Medic checks the boy and declares him fine besides a few scratches. Boy starts crying. Someone help him, he’s choking… (pathetic crying) Checking Yuusuke. “Well at least one of them is.” Yuusuke gets added dialogue. (can’t be quiet for a moment, sacrilege ^.~) “Uh… Hey!” “Man I hate cleanup.” O_o Geh! Poor American patients get rude medics. Who cares about the kid, he’s practically a corpse anyway.
Yuusuke protests. “Hey wait you!” Medic: “We’d better take the child in to double check.”	Yuusuke protests. “Hey, I’m right here!” Medic: “Cover this guy up, and take the little boy.” Poor dead Yuusuke. ^^;;
Yuusuke: “Hey I said wait! I’m right here! That isn’t me. Listen to me bastard!”	Yuuusuke: “Woah! You think you can do just whatever you want, ‘cause you’ve got that stupid uniform on? You can’t just write me off! Listen to me!” Desperate Yuu-kun…
(I’m going to skip over minor dialogue changes, you get the idea from that.)
Funny dialogue change: “Try to remember. I went to school after ten unexcused absences.”	“Today did start off different. I went to school.” shock ROFLMAO! Yes that’s definitely different for you Yuu-kun.
Urameshi pronounced: Ooo rah meh shee	Urameshi pronounced: Yew rah meh shee
Keiko reprimands Yuusuke for being on the roof and not in class. Yuusuke acts like he doesn’t care and calls Keiko a few choice words. Keiko then harps on him about how he’s going to fail out and have to repeat the grade. Then tells him Takenaka sensee’s been calling him for a while and he must have really screwed up, he’d better go see him. Yuusuke disappears and reappears looking under Keiko’s skirt. “Oh? They really are white.”	Yuusuke mocks Kayko’s skirt and they proceed to discuss the school clothing… O_o random dialogue change? Perhaps trying to explain the uniform but it’s not like private school’s don’t have them over here. People should know some schools require uniforms. Camera pans away and you hear cloth. Next is Yuusuke chuckling and saying “Niiice uniform.” And Kayko smacks him. EDIT No flipping up Kayko’s skirt. Cut to just where Yuusuke drops the skirt.
Keiko’s timid friends come out from hiding and tell Keiko that she’s brave for talking to Yusuuke. They act very awed that she’s so brave.	Kayko’s friends come out of hiding and proceed to tell Kayko she’s amazing then act snobby when Kayko tells them Yuusuke’s not so bad. (Timid women are baaad?)
Atsuko: “If you’re not going to go, quit. Going to school costs money you know.” “If you don’t like it, move your lazy ass out.”	Minor dialogue changes between Takenaka and Yuusuke, and more dialogue changes with Atsuko. “I swear if you’re not going to go just quit and get a job.” “If you hate preaching so much move out. But you can’t do that can you?”
Yuusuke walks down the street pissed: “Man this has been a bad day. Now I’m pissed.”	Yuusuke walks down the street pissed. “I SWEAR could this day GET any stupider?!”
Kuwabara shows up, picking another fight.	Kuwabara shows up. Man he sounds like a overdone cartoon villain. What a joke. It’s a terrible dubbed voice. You would think Kuwa-chan’s voice couldn’t get much worse than the Japanese version but that one at least fits him. You can tell it was a Vegeta’s voice actor. T_T
Botan shows up. Botan: “Despite all outward signs, you catch on quickly.”	Botan shows up: “I didn’t expect you to figure it out so quickly.”
Japanese Botan-chan is far cuter than the American version, even though she tends to insult him in roundabout ways.	Botan’s accent comes and goes as the show progresses. It’s ANNOYING! ::cries:: It’s not even a real accent, she puts syllables on funny words and acts like Yuusuke’s mom. What the heck is up with calling Yuusuke, dear?! She sounds like a vally girl trying to play out a British accent. Botan has quite a few dialogue changes but nothing major. She’s not as cute, and acts more superior in the American version. But she does do the giggle pretty well. Otherwise I don’t really like her dub.
Next major difference is Yuusuke’s wake. Kuwabara comes in and yells at Yuusuke: “Who am I going to fight from now on you asshole?! Damn, won’t you even accept my punch?”	Kuwabara shows up at the wake: “You dirty punk! Who’m I gonna fight now? You’re supposed to be here…. For me.” Wahahahah they added yaoi hints in! LOL! Go Kuwa-chan!
Botan asks Yuusuke if he’s going to take the trial. Yuusuke asks what kind it is and Botan replies that she doesn’t know. He agrees and they begin their journey to the spirit world.	Botan asks if Yuusuke’s decided, and Yuusuke changes the subject. “Hey Botan, have you ever found something that everyone else seemed to know but you didn’t?” And she replies that it happens a lot. Then he tells her he’ll go. And she says we’ll let’s get this baby going. O_o quite a dialogue change.
Narrator: There will be many challenges ahead for Yuusuke, can he overcome them?	Narrator: But what challenges await them in …. The spirit world. (cue dah dah dah!) der… that sounded irritating. O_o
Most of the music was basically the same.	Kayko’s voice actress does a relatively good job. I think it fits her well.
